We SAKATA, as a company that focuses on R&D, constantly aims to develop higher quality flowers and vegetable varieties for the world.

In order to support food supply in the world, we put extra focus in breeding varieties which helps mass production and supply reliability. We declare that none of our presently commercialized varieties, either flowers or vegetables, are GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) products. Our varieties are produced by traditional breeding methods by crossing parent varieties with desirable qualities. E.g. By crossing a variety with good taste with a variety with heat tolerance, we are able to produce a variety that is tasty and has heat tolerance.

It takes at least 10 years create a new variety with this method. Meanwhile, we picture the types of varieties that would be used in our daily lives. In order to provide for the different preference for taste and color throughout the world, we have an extensive network of R&D stations spread throughout the world in 11 countries with 18 stations, covering diverse environments.

In addition, we carry out strict quality control standards to ensure a supply of high-quality seeds with great reliability.With such high regards for seed quality and reliability, we are able to obtain a high world market share for our products. (Maintaining world market share of broccoli (65%) and lisianthus (70%))

SAKATA Group aims to contribute to improving the lives and cultures of people around the globe by providing high-quality products and services, and thus becoming the world's best seed and young plant company. Under the concept of "being the company supplying smiles and nutrition around the world", the entire SAKATA Group is working on 3 goals among 17 SDGs, namely "Goal 2: Zero hunger", which has a high affinity with sustainable development of agriculture and horticulture; "Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth", which is important for our employees and partners to enjoy their work; and "Goal 13: Climate action", which is closely related with seeds and young plants business that coexists with nature. We have also set regional goals tailored for each region, namely North and Central America, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), South America, Asia and Japan, and will advance our efforts in sustainable development throughout the world.

As an example of measures toward SDGs, Sakata Seed Corporation is providing scholarships to female students in India in order to encourage women’s education. On the World Day Against Child Labor, Sakata Seed Corporation has been giving lectures on child labor rules in villages throughout India.
